The North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) and Ampcontrol have released Smart Charging for Electric Depots, a joint report addressing one of the biggest challenges in fleet electrification: powering large-scale EV truck operations. Built on insights from Run on Less – Electric DEPOT, which tracked over 250 electric trucks in real-world use, the report outlines how smart charging enables fleets to scale sustainably.
Smart charging systems—like Ampcontrol’s cloud and local platform—optimize how and when trucks charge. They reduce infrastructure costs, manage TOU rates and demand charges, and integrate seamlessly with solar, battery storage, and telematics. This keeps vehicles ready without overloading the grid.
Across multiple deployments, smart charging has cut energy bills by up to 55% and reduced peak demand by 50%, saving hundreds of thousands per site annually. It’s the foundation for cost-effective, high-uptime EV operations.
“Smart charging is the key to making electric fleets scalable. This report is our way of helping fleets navigate new technologies and tough decisions,”
— Joachim Lohse, CEO at Ampcontrol
“With Run on Less and this report, we spotlight early adopters leading the way in electric trucking,”
— Mike Roeth, Executive Director at NACFE
