Ampcontrol Receives UL Certification to Oversubscribe Grid Connections

June 2, 2024

New York City, New York, December 12, 2023 — Ampcontrol is excited to announce that it received the UL 60730-1 certification for safe, dynamic load and energy management of electric vehicle (EV) chargers. This allows companies to use Ampcontrol to manage the power threshold on a group of EV charging stations across transformers, circuit breakers, or panels. In other words, companies can oversubscribe their grid interconnection and install more chargers without grid upgrades. Ampcontrol is the first-ever EV company to receive this certification.

With this, Ampcontrol's smart charging software complies with the expectations of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and Canadian Electrical Code.

The EV charging industry has faced several challenges when installing larger EV charging sites for fleet operators. For many charging stations or high-power chargers (DCFC), the project owners often need to wait several years for their grid upgrades. Grid upgrades are complex requests for utilities and are often delayed due to equipment delivery times or grid line upgrades. With the UL 60730-1 certification, companies can use Ampcontrol’s software to oversubscribe electric equipment and install more chargers without grid upgrades.

A typical example of this application is when a company wants to install multiple EV chargers to share the same breaker or operate EV chargers with a higher cumulative maximum charging current/power than the rated current/power of the transformer.

“Our UL 60730-1 certification marks a groundbreaking achievement in the electric vehicle charging industry. Businesses can break free from the constraints of grid limitations and local controllers and easily install more cloud-managed charging stations. This means more chargers, fewer grid upgrades, and endless possibilities for a greener tomorrow.” Jonas Schlund, VP of Solutions at Ampcontrol explained.
