How to Monitor Delta Chargers Effectively

Monitoring Delta chargers effectively is essential to ensure optimal charging performance, maximize uptime, and enhance the user experience. Delta offers a range of AC and DC chargers designed for both residential and commercial applications. These chargers are equipped with various connectivity options and support remote monitoring through integrated software solutions.

Types of Delta Chargers

Delta offers both AC and DC charging solutions suitable for residential, commercial, and fleet applications. Their AC chargers include models such as the AC MAX Smart and AC Mini Plus, which support three-phase charging with a power output of up to 22 kW. Delta's DC chargers range from the compact DC Wallbox with 25 kW output to the powerful UFC 500, capable of delivering up to 500 kW for heavy-duty and fast-charging scenarios.

Key features of Delta chargers include flexible connectivity options (Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Cellular), robust protection (IP55, IK10), and OCPP support for integration with backend systems. Delta chargers are widely used in commercial areas, residential buildings, parking stations, and fast-charging corridors.

How to Connect Delta Chargers to the Internet

Delta chargers offer multiple connectivity options, allowing seamless integration with network systems for remote monitoring and management.

  • Ethernet: Most Delta chargers come with Ethernet (RJ45) ports for reliable wired network connections. Ethernet ensures stable and high-speed data transmission.
  • Wi-Fi: Certain models, like the AC MAX Smart, support Wi-Fi connectivity, enabling wireless integration with management systems.
  • Cellular: Some Delta chargers come with built-in 3G/4G modems, providing connectivity in areas where wired internet is not feasible. This option ensures remote access even in remote or outdoor locations.

Most Delta chargers come with built-in Ethernet ports, making Ethernet the most reliable option for stable connectivity. Simply connect an Ethernet cable to the charger and configure the network settings through the user interface. To enhance reliability, we typically suggest to link all chargers to a centralized router with wired internet and backup SIM cards.

Integrating Delta Chargers with Remote Monitoring Software

Delta chargers support integration with remote monitoring software through OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol), which facilitates data exchange with backend systems. Configuration can be done mostly onsite. Only a few models support remote configuration. The Delta AC MAX and DC chargers support OCPP 1.6, with some models offering upgradeability to OCPP 2.0.

After establishing internet connectivity on-site, the next step is to connect your Delta charger to your monitoring platform using the OCPP protocol. Delta, as one of the earliest adopters of OCPP, ensures compatibility with a wide range of third-party software. At Ampcontrol, we’ve tested many Delta models, allowing customers to monitor charging sessions, optimize energy usage, and maximize uptime.

To connect your Delta charger to the monitoring platform, follow these steps:

  1. Verify that your Delta charger supports the required OCPP version (e.g., OCPP 1.6 or OCPP 2.0.1).
  2. Obtain the backend URL and credentials for your monitoring platform.
  3. Check the firmware version on the Delta charger and update it if necessary.
  4. To change the OCPP URL, use a USB stick with pre-configured settings (incl. URL, charger ID, and similar.
  5. Reboot the Delta charger and verify the connection to the monitoring software.
  6. Wait up to 10 minutes to see the charger connecting to the monitoring software
  7. Perform functional tests

Below is an example of a Delta configuration file. Please note: file structure and parameters vary by model, firmware version, and backend requirements.

Data Insights from Delta Chargers

Delta chargers can provide comprehensive data on charging sessions, including energy usage, session duration, and charging status. Error reporting includes notifications for overcurrent, overvoltage, and temperature anomalies. Data reporting is efficient, enabling operators to monitor performance and maintenance needs in real time.

This data is essential for implementing smart charging functionalities, managing grid connections, and optimizing energy costs. Delta chargers can dynamically adjust power output in response to smart charging commands, making them ideal for scenarios such as oversubscribing grid connections or responding to variable energy pricing. This ensures efficient energy management and cost optimization.

Challenges in Remote Monitoring of Delta Chargers

Ensuring reliable connectivity in remote areas can be challenging, especially for chargers that rely solely on cellular networks. Delta addresses this by supporting over-the-air (OTA) updates, simplifying firmware management across distributed chargers. However, it’s crucial to verify the firmware version currently installed on the charger and ensure compatibility with the monitoring software to maintain seamless operation.
