When you’re choosing DC chargers for electric trucks, there are dozens of options and the choice can seem bewildering.

Here at Ampcontrol, we’ve worked with all the major providers of fast DC chargers, so we can safely say which ones we recommend for electric truck fleets.

In no particular order, here are the top DC chargers for trucks available on the market right now.

1. Zerova

Zerova (also known under the brand name Phihong) is a veteran in the charger manufacturing scene. They've been around since 1972, originally in electronics but have focused on EV chargers since 2010. It's impressive how they've adapted over the decades.

The company is based in Taiwan, but their chargers are installed all over the world, including key markets like the U.S. and Europe.So far, they've installed more than 60,000 ports worldwide. Their lineup of Zerova DC chargers for trucks includes:

  • DZ480 Series: This beast of a charger is scalable up to 3.84 Megawatts. It's a powerhouse designed for heavy-duty uses, perfect for large fleets that need quick turnarounds.
  • DQ Series: These standalone units are all about efficiency, capable of charging up to four trucks at once with 480kW power. That's a lot of juice, making it ideal for busy truck fleets.
  • DS180kW Charger: Great for both public and fleet use, this model fits into more general charging needs but still offers the robust power needed for trucks.
  • 30kW Models: These smaller units are versatile, available in both wall-mount and portable forms, making them suitable for truck depots where space and power management are key.

What’s particularly good about Zerova is the variety they offer — standalone models for simpler setups, as well as more complex systems with separate power cabinets and dispensers. We’ve seen big names like Audi and Shell using their tech, which speaks volumes about their reliability and efficiency.

2. ABB

ABB  is at the forefront of DC fast charging technology and was one of the first companies to roll out DC charging networks in 2012. Their chargers, such as the Terra DC line, range from 180 kW to 350 kW, tailored for rapid charging that minimizes downtime for fleet vehicles. 

Their upcoming Megawatt Charging System, set to launch by 2025, promises to revolutionize charging for long-distance transport, showing their commitment to advancing EV infrastructure.

ABB currently partners with the US Department of Transportation, as well as private fleet operators, especially in the US. 

The flexibility of ABB’s solutions is evident in their modular designs, which allow for easy scalability and maintenance. The chargers support a wide voltage range and various connector types, ensuring compatibility across different truck models and preparing for future advancements in vehicle technology.

3. Grasen

Grasen offers a wide range of EV chargers, including fast DC chargers for trucks. They’re all about efficiency and reliability, making sure you get a fast, smooth charge every time with chargers tough enough to handle any weather.

Grasen’s got a strong global presence, too, with their chargers in over 40 countries and lots of patented tech under their belt.

In terms of DC chargers for trucks and buses, they offer:

  • High Power Output: Their chargers range from 30kW to 420kW, allowing for rapid charging that can get a truck's battery charged quickly and efficiently.

4. Star Charge

Star Charge stands out in the EV charging market with a lineup that includes everything from quick DC chargers to convenient home chargers. They pack their products with features like mobile app controls for easy management and strong safety protections against all sorts of electrical issues. 

Globally, Star Charge is expanding its reach, working with major auto manufacturers and actively participating in international standards development. They're making a significant push into the American market. To date, they’ve shipped over 2 million chargers worldwide.

At Ampcontrol, we’ve thoroughly tested Star Charge's DC chargers, confirming their compliance with OCPP standards. We’re seeing them more and more in our projects and expect their presence to grow, especially in the Americas.

5. Power Electronics

Power Electronics has been producing power electronics equipment since 1987. These days they offer a range of DC fast chargers, especially tailored for heavy commercial use.

Their DC options, the NB 50 and NB Station models, are designed to handle the demands of busy public spots and truck depots, delivering up to 1200 kW. This kind of power allows fast charging and makes sure your trucks are back on the road quickly. They can also handle multiple vehicles at once.

Chinese company Shenzhen Infypower Co., Ltd. was founded in 2014. They offer a good range of DC fast chargers for trucks and commercial vehicles. To date, they have delivered more than 1.6 million units globally.

Infypower chargers go up to a hefty 480/640kW and they support multiple connector types like CCS and CHAdeMO, making them versatile across different truck models.

Their chargers are also smart, equipped with OCPP protocols for easy integration with existing networks and energy management systems. Features like energy storage integration and modular designs enhance their adaptability and efficiency in fleet operations.

At Ampcontrol, we've connected several Infy Power DC charger installations, with significant engagement from fleet operators in Latin America. They appreciate Infypower’s reasonable price points and the brand's strong availability in the region, making it a preferred choice.

7. Ekoenergetyka

Ekoenergetyka is a Polish company that was founded in 2009. They have become a strong contender in the DC charger market for electric trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles. They offer:

  • High Power Output: Their chargers range from 50 kW up to a massive 600 kW, perfect for rapid charging of large electric trucks, cutting down charging time.
  • Modular Design: Models like the SAT 600 HPC are modular, which allows for scalability as your fleet grows and simplifies maintenance.
  • Wide Voltage Compatibility: Chargers such as the EV Charger U350 Nevron series support a voltage range from 150 VDC to 950 VDC, accommodating a wide array of vehicle specifications.
  • Versatile Connector Options: They offer connectors like CCS Combo2 and CHAdeMO, ensuring they work with various truck models across different manufacturers.
  • Advanced Features: They've integrated modern tech like liquid-cooled connectors for optimal power use.
  • Space-Efficient Design: Despite their high power, chargers like those from the Nevron series are designed to be compact, which is ideal for locations with limited space.
  • High Standards of Reliability: All their chargers adhere to strict European standards, guaranteeing both quality and reliability.
  • Flexible Installation Options: The Axon Side series and others offer various installation configurations, meeting diverse site requirements.
  • Smart Charging Management: Their chargers can easily integrate with external fleet management and charging systems, which is essential for efficient fleet operations.

In recent years, Ekoenergetyka has partnered with notable companies such as Deutsche Bahn (DB), PKP Intercity, and other municipal transport operators.

At Ampcontrol, we’ve been putting Ekoenergetyka’s DC chargers through rigorous interoperability tests as they are often white-labeled. These chargers perform well and meet OCPP compliance standards, though they’re not yet widely used in our fleet operations. We're anticipating this will change as more fleet operators recognize their potential.

8. BTC Power

BTC Power is a US company based in Irvine, California. They offer DC fast chargers for trucks that go up to 360 kW power. Featuring a modular design, the chargers are easy to maintain and are scalable as EV technology progresses.

BTC Power chargers include capabilities for simultaneous charging, allowing multiple vehicles to charge at once, and dynamic power allocation to efficiently distribute power where it's needed most. These features are complemented by a wide voltage compatibility and multiple connector options. 

Notable partnerships include Penske Truck Leasing, Daimler Trucks, and other fleet operations – including government and public sector uses.

At Ampcontrol, we’ve seen BTC Power chargers mainly in the U.S., with several fleet operators incorporating them into their sites. Their models consistently meet the OCPP standard, making them a reliable and flexible choice for integrating into diverse charging infrastructures. 

9. Heliox

Heliox was founded in 2009 and focuses on DC fast chargers for big vehicles such as electric buses and trucks, combining high power output with smart tech. Their chargers, delivering up to 360 kW, ensure that e-truck fleets can get back on the road quickly thanks to ultra-rapid charging capabilities. 

Their Flex series showcases a modular design that can route power in increments of 60 to 120 kW and serve up to three vehicles simultaneously. Heliox makes sure their chargers are compatible with a broad range of electric vehicles, ensuring they meet the diverse needs of various manufacturers.

At Ampcontrol, we've integrated Heliox DC chargers in several large fleet depots. Their experience in fleet charging is impressive, and they have a solid presence in multiple countries. It'll be interesting to see how their recent acquisition by Siemens will enhance their hardware offerings and support services. Heliox's commitment to innovation, such as incorporating V2G functionality and smart charging capabilities, positions them well to support the future of electric trucking.

10. Tritium

Tritium, founded in 2001 by James Kennedy and two other engineering graduates in Brisbane, Australia, initially focused on solar car motor controllers before pivoting to electric vehicle (EV) chargers.  

Tritium made a big impact with their advanced DC fast chargers, offering models up to 350 kW. They became well known for compatibility with any EV, extreme durability, and implementing cutting-edge Plug and Charge technology. 

Despite these innovations and being used by big companies like BP, Tritium has faced financial challenges recently. They declared insolvency for its Australian operations in 2024, which might affect future availability and support. Although the company has stopped trading on the NASDAQ and is in administration, efforts are being made to find a buyer and keep the business operational. The company's future remains uncertain at this point.
